Nominate them for a 2018 College of Education Award!

This year’s honors come in eight categories, each with specific criteria. More information about each award, as well as a link to each online nomination form, is available below.

A letter from the nominator and two letters of support are required to complete the online nomination.

All nominations are due by 4 p.m. Thursday, March 22. Recipients will be recognized Friday, May 4, during the Celebration of Excellence ceremony.

Excellence in Teaching Award by Faculty/Clinical Faculty 2018
1. Open to tenure-track, tenured and clinical faculty for their teaching accomplishments in the recent calendar year.
2. Provides recognition of outstanding contributions in the classroom or in an online course (face-to-face and/or online) environment in which students have been challenged, engaged and supported toward excellence in learning.
3. Professor has demonstrated creative and innovative pedagogy, such as:

  • activities that promote engagement with class activities and learning experiences
  • service learning
  • community-based educational activities that provide out-of-the-classroom involvement
  • inclusion of technology in innovative ways
  • bridging the gap between theory and application
  • innovative and noteworthy inclusion of diversity and social justice issues
  • relevance of the course to real-world experiences
  • participation in other activities that contribute to teaching excellence.

4. Outstanding evaluations/feedback from participating students in the class

Excellence in Research and Artistry Award by Faculty 2018
1. Open to tenure-track, tenured and clinical faculty for their research and artistry accomplishments in the recent calendar year.
2. Provides recognition of outstanding contributions to research and to other endeavors such as exceptional artistry or performance that have made a significant impact on the field to which the faculty member belongs.
3. Professor has demonstrated research and artistry excellence in the field in multiple ways, such as:

  • obtaining high quality publications in top-tiered journals in the field
  • receiving major grants and fellowships to support research and artistry
  • presenting at state, regional, national and/or international conferences to promote creative or innovative knowledge and skills in the field
  • service as an editor or a member of the editorial boards of professional publications
  • being awarded grants for the program and/or department that reflect innovation and the creative engagement of departmental personnel and students
  • presentation of a noteworthy or otherwise significant artistic performance
  • involvement in other activities that contribute to excellence in research and artistry

Excellence in Service Award by Faculty 2018
1. Open to tenure-track, tenured and clinical faculty for their service accomplishments in and/or outside of the university in the recent calendar year.
2. Recognizes outstanding service that has had a positive impact on the department, college and/or university, profession or community.
3. Professor has demonstrated service excellence in the field by completing activities, such as:

  • professional leadership
  • mentorship of faculty, staff or students
  • development of new ways to disseminate information and innovative ideas on behalf of the profession
  • noteworthy service to state, regional, national and/or international boards or professional organizations
  • leadership in state or national agencies on behalf of the profession or higher education
  • partnerships with schools, community agencies and/or other institutions
  • participation in other activities that contribute to leadership in service

Exceptional Contributions by Instructors 2018

1. Open to any full-time SPS staff member in the College of Education who has made exceptional contributions in the recent calendar year.
2. Recognizes outstanding contributions to the department and/or college that go above and beyond the assigned duties of the SPS member and contribute to the enhancement of the program/department/college in significant ways.
3. Staff member has demonstrated creativity and innovation in such activities as:

  • creating a positive work environment
  • seeking to improve service and work flow
  • going beyond minimal work expectations in a significant and tangible manner that produces valued outcomes
  • advocating for students in ways that contribute to retention and recruitment

2. Recognizes outstanding contributions in addressing and promoting diversity and social justice that have had a positive impact on the department, college and/or university.
3. Employee has demonstrated excellence in addressing diversity or social justice issues by participating in activities, such as:

  • advocating for diverse students
  • addressing social justice needs for students and the college/program
  • bridging gaps between people through dialogue and activities that lead to enhance communication or engagement between diverse groups within the community
  • contributing to diversity and social justice through innovative teaching, research or community outreach within the department and college
  • participation in other activities that successfully contribute to the understanding and support of diversity and social justice

Dennis Awen, a doctoral dissertation student in the Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education, received an award for his paper presented at the 2017 International Symposium on Education and Psychology in Seoul, Korea. Awen initially started writing the paper last spring for an assignment in CAHA 733.

Three College of Education students are among the 2017 class of the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program, a group of 234 dynamic young people who have chosen to dedicate themselves to future careers teaching students in Illinois schools-of-need. All are majoring in Elementary Education.

  • Lauren Anhalt of Plainfield is a sophomore.
  • Halley Fogerty of Wheaton is a freshman.
  • Hailey Pezdek of Worth is a freshman.

Launched in 1989, the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program is uniquely designed to prepare future teachers to thrive in the most challenging high-needs school environments where more resilient teachers are desperately needed. The program provides tuition assistance to each future teacher while they pursue an undergraduate education.

Ben Mommer, an M.S.Ed.-IT student in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment, worked an amazing summer internship at the Shedd Aquarium. Mommer created training videos and captivate modules for the marine mammal training department.

The spring awards season goes on for the NIU College of Education.

Eui-Kyung Shin, professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Tom Smith, Presidential Teaching Professor in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment, join former colleague Andrew Milson of the University of Texas at Arlington, in an award from the National Council for Geographic Education.

For more than 100 years, the NCGE has worked to enhance the status and quality of geography teaching and learning at all levels of instruction. Through its awards program, NCGE recognizes excellence in geography teaching, mentoring, research, instructional design and service.

ncge“Each year, we are impressed by the level of innovation, quality and creativity of all our award nominees,” said Zachary R. Dulli, chief executive officer. “Understanding our world is critical to a high-quality education, and these award winners represent the best of the best in providing that to our students.”

Shin, Smith and Milson were honored “Future Teachers’ Spatial Thinking Skills and Attitudes,” which earned top honors as Best College/University Article in the Journal of Geography Awards category. Milson taught in the NIU College of Education from 1999 to 2001.

Recipients of NCGE recognition will receive their awards at a special ceremony held during the 2017 National Conference on Geography Education, scheduled from July 27 to July 30 in Albuquerque, N.M.

The event in Anderson Hall recognized winners of the College of Education awards.

Also stepping into the spotlight:

  • Tom Smith, a newly named NIU Presidential Teaching Professor from the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment;
  • soon-to-retire Toni Tollerud (COE personnel consultant) and Susan Schwartz (academic advisor, KNPE); and
  • Rachel Bicksler, Lauren Leifheit and Jacinda Starr, three of the freshmen who were among 2016-17’s inaugural group of Dean’s Achievement Scholarship recipients.

Iowa State honors David Walker

David Walker

David Walker’s fervent curiosity about the world beyond the United States has shaped his life.

As an undergraduate at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history, political science and Russian studies. He also studied abroad in the former Soviet Union in 1987.

“I got a taste of being overseas,” Walker says, “and I enjoyed it immensely.”

Following graduation, Walker and his wife joined the Peace Corps, serving together from 1989 to 1991 in Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo) and from 1992 to 1994 in Mauritania.

Those years in Francophone Africa sparked his interest in the history of that region, and upon his return home, he enrolled at Iowa State University to earn a master’s degree in history. He later completed a Ph.D. there in education.

Since then, as an academic with a dynamic research agenda of qualitative methodology, significant grant funding, a strong record of mentoring graduate students and a platform of promoting international collaboration as president of the Mid-Western Educational Research Association, Walker has undeniably forged an impressive career.

Now the associate dean of the NIU College of Education has external confirmation of that fact.

globeWalker is the 2017 recipient of Iowa State’s Virgil Lagomarcino Laureate Award, which honors graduates of the College of Human Sciences who are nationally and internationally recognized for their meritorious service or distinguished achievement in the field of education.

He will travel to Ames in October for the ceremony, which takes place during Homecoming.

“I feel very honored and humbled that my peers support me. Iowa State is kind of where it all started for me,” says Walker, who came to NIU in 2003 as an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment.

The former Cyclone has dedicated himself to modeling his professors there.

“At Iowa State, I mentored under some of the best in the business,” he says, “and after I graduated, it became apparent to me how privileged I was to study under these great names in our field. I consider it my due diligence to give back to the field, and I strive to do that in my teaching and research.”

Fellow Iowa State alumna Christine Sorensen Irvine, a former dean of the NIU College of Education, nominated Walker for the award. The two also have published together.

Walker is looking forward to his trip back to Ames to collect his Lagomarcino.

“I’ll see a lot of good friends and mentors,” he says. “It’s going to be a great evening.”

SHAPE America honors KNPE’s Paul Wright

SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) presented its Outstanding Mentor of the Year Award to NIU’s Paul M. Wright, who holds the Lane/Zimmerman Endowed Professorship in Kinesiology and Physical Education.

Wright was recognized April 7 during SHAPE America’s 131st National Convention & Expo in Minneapolis.

SHAPE America presents the Outstanding Mentor of the Year Award annually in recognition of one higher education faculty member for his or her efforts to mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students pursuing a degree in physical education, sport, kinesiology or exercise science.
